MEET VALERIE GIGANTE, PRINCIPAL

Mrs. Gigante

I feel humbled and blessed to hold the position of principal at St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School.  My passion for education began back in nursery school, as evidenced in that class photo where I can be found standing next to Miss Grace, my teacher, with a hand resting casually on her shoulder.  I have loved school since then and am so grateful that I get to spend my days doing what I love.

I received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia in French Literature and Language and continued my studies at New York University where I received a Master of Arts in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

I began my teaching career at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District teaching Kindergarten.  It should come as no surprise that Lockhart was the school where I attended Kindergarten as a child.  You may see a pattern forming here...

After staying at home to raise my three children, I returned to teaching, quite by chance, as a 4th grade teacher at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.  Yes, you guessed it, I attended St. Rose for my middle school years.  I continued my teaching at St. Rose and taught Technology to Grades 1 through 8.  During my time there, I had the great good fortune to start a Mac Lab which opened many doors to communication for both my students and myself.

After several years at St. Rose, I received a call from a former high school teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, New York.  She encouraged me to come to Mercy and go back to school for a degree in Administration and Supervision.  I embraced the challenge, began working as Mercy's Director of Communications and entered Fordham University's program for Catholic School Leadership.

Three years later and that degree completed, I was asked by Msgr. Maniscalco to join him at St. Thomas in the beautiful mission to teach, building community, and serve.   I accepted the role of principal and have found great joy in this awesome responsibility of stewardship.  While I did not attend St. Thomas School as a child, I feel like I have found a very special home within its walls.

I continue my education today at Fordham University as I begin my third year as a Doctoral Student in the Graduate School of Education.  I am thankful to use my learnings to further our mission at St. Thomas for the benefit of all children in our faith community.

I look forward to a wonderful year filled with love, learning, and living the Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Please feel free to reach out with any concerns or questions.

Peace and blessings,

Valerie Gigante
